Dry needling in addition to standard physical therapy treatment for sub-acromial pain syndrome: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

Braz J Phys Ther. 2018 Nov 06;:

Authors: Hando BR, Rhon DI, Cleland JA, Snodgrass SJ

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Trigger point dry needling interventions are utilized by physical therapists to manage shoulder pain. Observational studies have shown positive short-term outcomes in patients with subacromial pain syndrome receiving trigger point dry needling. However, little research has been done to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of trigger point dry needling specifically as it compares to other commonly utilized interventions such as exercise and manual therapy. The purpose of this study is to assess the additive short and long-term effectiveness of trigger point dry needling to a standard physical therapy approach of manual therapy and exercise for patients with subacromial pain syndrome.
METHODS: This multicenter randomized trial with 3 arms was designed following the standard protocol items for randomized interventional trials. Results will be reported consistent with the consolidated standards of reporting trials guidelines. 130 participants will be randomized to receive standard PT interventions alone (manual therapy and exercise), standard PT and trigger point dry needling or standard PT and sham trigger point dry needling. The primary outcome measures will be the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index and Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information Systems (PROMIS-57) scores collected at baseline, 6-weeks, 6-months and one year. Healthcare utilization will be collected for 12 months following enrollment and groups analyzed for differences.
DISCUSSION: It is not known if trigger point dry needling provides long-term benefit for individuals with subacromial pain syndrome. This study will help determine if this intervention provides additive benefits over those observed with the commonly applied interventions of exercise and manual therapy.

Integrative Dry Needling Institute

I truly believe that IDN should be in everyone’s “tool box” to help their patients.  It incorporates the body as a whole but allows for other treatment techniques and is not pushed as a stand alone treatment.

Testimonials

Integrative Dry Needling Institute

I have been needling for 4 years now and learned a different way to think when needling patients.  Not just looking at the muscles that hurt with palpitation, but really looking above, below, 360, 720 degrees.  Everything I learned in the course I will definitely be using  in the clinic.

Testimonials

Integrative Dry Needling Institute

The foundation’s course for Integrative Dry Needling was very well taught in much detail.  The course is completely evidenced based with no overlap with acupuncture or eastern medicine.  The instructors were very experienced and had an emphasis on needling with safety. By the end of the course, I felt like I was able to needle my patients confidently and safely.  This course opened up infinite possibilities of different treatment techniques for all my patients.

Excellent! This is the best, most hands on, most useful CE course I have attending in a long time.  The course is very comprehensive: technique, anatomy, hands on practice, case studies, marketing, administrative and billing suggestions.  I can’t recommend it highly enough!  Looking so forward to the advanced course! Thank you Nick. Excellent Job!

Testimonials

Integrative Dry Needling Institute

Wonderful course! I’m afraid of needles and of watching needles go into the skin. David and Nick were great in showing how  safe needling can be and ways to make the process as pain-free as possible. I left the course over my fear of using needles and excited to use this treatment on my patients.
