IDN-Diagnostic Ultrasound For The Assessment & Dry Needling Treatment Of Tendinopathy

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for The Assessment & Dry Needling Treatment of Tendinopathy is a 2-day, 95% hands-on-training course. In this advanced level course, you will master the 5 P’s system of diagnostic US assessment and treatment to confidently identify normal anatomy to facilitate clinical decision-making. Ultrasound guided dry needling treatment is focused on utilizing percutaneous needle tenotomy (PNT) for all the shoulder tendon insertions and other common sites of tendinopathy of the upper and lower extremity such as lateral elbow, achilles tendon insertion, patella tendon, quadriceps tendon insertion, gluteus medius and minimus insertions. Research of PNT on commonly visualized tendon dysfunction supports that dry needling, in the symptomatic areas, can yield long-term benefits that rival wet needling procedures i.e. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. You will learn and be able to give visual feedback to your patients demonstrating the anatomical condition of their joints and tendons.

[Prerequisite-prior DN training/experience is required. Your training can be with a different continuing education provider, you do not need to be trained specifically by  IDN]

The purpose of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for The Assessment & Dry Needling Treatment of Tendinopathy is to obtain the knowledge and psychomotor skills necessary to visualize joints, muscles and tendons to safely and effectively deliver dry needling treatment.

This 2-day applied-learning course combines live instructor demonstrations with practical hands-on labs. Students participate in small groups of 2 -3 clinicans working together to  obtain reliable and reproducible US images that are evaluated by the instructor with individual feedback provided. Supervised lab sessions are performed to safely and effectively visualize, and deliver dry needle treatment to pathologic tendons and other soft tissue structures.

  1. Demonstrate the application of the 5 P’s of MSK ultrasound in a given body part in labs and during the practical examination.
  2. Discuss the current research on the benefits of percutaneous needle tenotomy for a given case study example.
  3. Independently demonstrate competence and safe technique in dry needling tendons while utilizing ultrasound.
  4. Demonstrate and produce images practicing scanning protocol for the shoulder and other specific tendons for the upper and lower extremities during lab sessions.
  5. Demonstrate the normal sonographic anatomy of the shoulder and various tendons of the upper and lower extremities during lab sessions.
  6. Demonstrate in and out of plane ultrasound guided dry needling techniques for a given musculoskeletal condition.
  7. Demonstrate ultrasound guided dry needling treatments for tendons of the upper and lower extremities for a given case study.

Prior DN training/experience is required. Your training can be with a different continuing education provider, you do not need to be trained specifically by  IDN.

Aren't Ultrasound Machines Expensive?

Many people ask about Dr. Coppola’s recommendations purchasing ultrasound units. There are ultrasound units for every budget, understand that price and quality can go hand and hand.

  • Butterfly iQ+:  This unit can be purchased for $2,000 to $3,000, with payment programs where you can get the unit for as low as $68 per month. The Butterfly unit shows needles well under the ultrasound.
  • Clarius L7: this is the best buy/affordable option. It cost $4900.00 with payments as low as $99.00 a month.  This unit gives a nice quality image and visualization of anatomic structures and is the unit that will be used during the course.
  • Sonosite Edge: Non-handheld / portable option.  These units are quite expensive, but give a great image and are real work horses.  Prices range from $20,000 to $40,000.

Student Testimonials

The pre-course handout was very helpful. There was plenty of time to really dive deep into assessing and then needling. Steve is extremely knowledgeable and there was enough lab time to really practice and learn the technique.

Enough lab time to really practice KATHERINE WELDON, PT

I have been to many continuing education courses and this course with Steve is one of the best I have attended. Steve is very knowledgeable and the course covered a ton of clinical material.

Course covered a ton of clinical material ERIK HOLMES, PT

Great course with very relevant clinical application. Being able to view, treat and diagnose is a game changer.

Game changer DAN FLEURY, PT

Great course, great instructor and a great new tool to add to the tool box. Very excited to use in the clinic.

Great course, great instructor KATE SERODIO, PT

I loved how much hands on time we had on the course and how it was evidence based. I learned so much and can apply the material.

Lots of hands-on time!

Steve is able to present the information and knowledge in an understandable and encouraging way.

US is the future of PT! Glenn Flaming, PT

I have completed fellowship training in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS).. Dr. Coppola and his assistant demonstrated their expertise and exceptional skills in a progressive and structured format that assisted the students in building confidence in their ability to identify anatomical structures and then dry needle those structures effectively over the course of two days. This course was 90% hands-on with significant one-on-mentoring throughout and provides good evidence-based education. I highly recommend this course. Thank you!
