COURSE INFORMATION

Description

Dry needling consideration for the active adult and athlete course is a lecture-based virtual synchronous course that will develop the knowledge and clinical skills required to effectively assess and dry needling people who are competitive athletes and regular exercisers. This course will teach the participant to treat the body for painful conditions and general sports related recovery through a better understanding of neuroinflammation and the autonomic nervous system as it relates to exercise.  This course is built on the foundation of the Integrative Dry Needling Institute of dry needling concepts with an in-depth assessment of the local and systemic effects of needling as it pertains to the athlete. 

Purpose

The purpose of this lecture-based virtual synchronous course is to obtain the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to treat pain and dysfunction in the athlete and active adult at all time points in their exercise training cycle and competitive seasons. Students will have a better understanding of the local and systemic effects of exercise and how it pertains to dry needling. 


Audience

This course is designed for licensed healthcare professionals, PT’s, DC’s, M.D.’s, D.O.’s. PA’s, ATC’s and CNP’s that specialize in treating musculoskeletal pain. 

Learning Objectives
  1. Correctly identify and apply proper precautions related to practice of dry needling and exercise.
  2. Utilize quantitative sensory testing, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and RPE to assess for systemic stress and properly adjust needling dosage based on these findings.
  3. Integrate the physiological mechanisms of needling when developing a treatment plan for active adults and athletes.
  4. Discuss the prevention and management of adverse responses to dry needling active adults and athletes based on OSHA requirements with 100% accuracy during post course exam.
  5. Independently adjust dry needling dosage for the active adult and athlete.
  6. Independently integrate dry needling treatment into a comprehensive plan of care including other manual therapies, therapeutic exercise, and other treatment modalities.
