Advanced Dry Needling Mechanisms and Clinical Integration

COURSE INFORMATION

Description

This comprehensive and dynamic 6-hour online course led by Mark Hernandez PT, is designed for clinicians seeking a deeper understanding of dry needling within the context of inflammation science and complex patient care. Delivered through segmented video modules, the course integrates current neurobiology, immunology, and biomechanics to elevate clinical reasoning and treatment precision. Participants explore immune cell behavior (e.g., mast cells, microglia, cytokines), dry needling’s segmental and systemic effects, and its role in modulating both acute and chronic inflammatory responses. The course features real-world clinical applications including swelling protocols, tendon regeneration strategies, and fascial or nerve-related pain syndromes. Through case-based teaching—spanning conditions like CRPS, scoliosis, and cancer recovery—clinicians learn to apply

Purpose

To equip licensed clinicians with an advanced understanding of inflammatory physiology and how dry needling can be used to regulate systemic and localized inflammation, improve tissue healing, and manage complex pain conditions—especially in patients with chronic inflammation, post-surgical needs, or neuromuscular dysfunction.

Content

This comprehensive home study course combines research-driven theory with real-world clinical insights. Each module is carefully designed to deepen your understanding of inflammatory mechanisms and how to apply dry needling with precision and purpose. You’ll gain access to rich learning materials, in-depth algorithm charts, clinical demonstrations, and practical tools that support immediate integration into your patient care.

Agenda

Video 1: Introduction to Dry Needling and Foundational Concepts
This video introduces the purpose of dry needling within a broader treatment framework, emphasizing that it’s not a standalone intervention. It reviews foundational concepts around pain, inflammation, and tissue healing, and sets the stage for how dry needling integrates with other therapies like cupping, exercise, and manual techniques.

Video 2: Cupping Therapy – Mechanisms and Clinical Application
This session explores the physiological rationale and clinical use of cupping therapy, including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuromodulatory effects. You’ll learn the difference between static and dynamic cupping, proper techniques, precautions, and how cupping can be used to enhance tissue mobility and modulate chronic pain.

Video 3: Biochemical Modulation and Vibration for Edema Management
Here we dive into how biochemical signals like inflammatory mediators can be locally regulated using needling and vibration. Case studies highlight the impact of dry needling on lymphatic drainage and pain reduction, with special attention to tools like FLIR imaging, cupping, and percussive vibration to manage edema and restore joint mobility.

Video 4: Diagnostic Ultrasound and Tendon Pathology
This video introduces diagnostic ultrasound as both a clinical and motivational tool, particularly in the assessment of tendon pathology. You’ll explore the biological behavior of tendons, mechanisms of degeneration, and the crucial role of load-based rehab, nutrition, and collagen supplementation in tendon healing and regeneration.

Video 5: The Immunobiology of Tendon and Collagen Supplementation
Dr. Keith Barr’s video presents cutting-edge insights into the molecular biology of tendons. The discussion includes tendon immunobiology, loading strategies, nutritional timing, and supplementation (including collagen and vitamin C) for connective tissue healing. Real-world protocols for athletes recovering from major injuries are reviewed in detail.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the neurophysiological basis of inflammation and its relevance to dry needling
  • Identify pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and their role in recovery
  • Apply dry needling principles to influence vasoregulation and lymphatic flow
  • Recognize markers of chronic inflammation and their role in persistent pain
  • Safely needle complex anatomical regions (e.g., abdomen, spine, post-surgical sites)
  • Integrate cupping and soft tissue tools to enhance clinical outcomes
Prerequisite

There are no formal prerequisites. However, this course is best suited for clinicians with a working knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and foundational experience in dry needling, manual therapy and use of soft tissue tools.
