Hello all,

I have patient who has had to undergo prolonged chemo due to fighting ALL and previously breast cancer. She stopped chemo about 6months ago and is in remission but is worried about infection risk due to skin puncture of needles. Is there any research on possible infection rates for those with immune compromised populations? I know DN is used often in oncology populations looking to see if I can give her numbers as she is an accountant and loves the stats. Thanks you.

Hi Andrew,

I am not aware of the type of research you mention- the fact is infection is almost a non- factor.  That said, when you have a immunocompromised patients you treat them differently.  Intensity of the needle is certainly less in the beginning to test her ability to recover and certainly less is more.  I treat patient with CA and they respond well because DN helps the system with reducing inflammation and promotes the immune system transition from pro to an anti-infammatory environment. So while I can't speak to this specific patient the general effect is positive and has been cited in the literature that all forms of needling are helpful in treating the neuromuscular effects of CA and it's various treatments.  I just wrote a paper that I will be posting to the IDN community on the needle effects so more to come on this topic.
