I have a football player who was hit in the back of his calf by a helmet. His calf swelled up and we thought he might have compartment syndrome in his anterior and lateral compartment (pressure was 30). He did not have compartment syndrome nor did he have surgery. He just got released from the hospital after 48 hours of observation.

Would this athlete benefit from dry needling?

DN will provide pain relief so at the minimum you can use it in these instances. The beauty of IDN is you do not need to needle directly in the areas if you have any concerns but follow the nerve path both proximally and distally to have an effect on the calf. You can also do superficial needling to the calf to get the physiological effect again without concern of any side effects.
