Hi IDN crew,

Just checking in... Are there any precautions/contraindications for DN + ENS for pt's that have IUD? I was planning to perform DN techniques of lumbar/hip region. Thanks in advance!

Yes, it’s safe to needle the hip and lumbar spine with electrical nerve stimulation (ENS) in someone who has an IUD. The IUD is located in the uterus and doesn’t interfere with needling or electrical currents in the lumbar or hip region.

However, be cautious in the lumbar spine if the patient has:

  • Metal implants (e.g., spinal hardware) → Avoid ENS directly over metal.
  • Laminectomies → No bony backdrop, so needle with extra care.
  • Implanted electrical devices (like spinal cord stimulators or pain pumps with leads) → ENS is contraindicated due to potential device interference.

Always confirm implant details before proceeding. Let me know if you’d like guidance on point locations or techniques!
