I have a patient that was diagnosed with Parkinson's and has bilateral peripheral neuropathy for about a year or so now. He is also very weak in his gastroc and invertors and was curious if people have had success with DN with similar cases? Where did you needle?

Thank you!

Hey Chelsey,

I have had varied level of success treating neuropathy type pain. If it is a true neuropathy, I think the experience of relief is probably related to the amount of nerve degeneration. I often find patients get some symptomatic relief with needling, it is just a question of how long it lasts. Some people will find weeks of relief but some may only find limited change.

As long as there are no other contraindications I would give it a go as a part of his plan of care. I would start with the lower extremity homeostatic points and see how he responds. Tibial and sural would get you in the sensory and motor distributions of his weakness pattern. You may also try ENS along the tibial distribution as a progression.
