Good morning, everyone.  Newly trained practitioner here.  Does anybody have some advice about dry needling and blood flow restriction training within the same session?  If you plan do both, would you needle before or after the BFRT?  Would it make a meaningful difference, or am I just overthinking it?  My main concerns would be if applying the cuffs after needling could have adverse effects on the needling sites due to the increased limb pressure, or if inserting needles after the limb is potentially sensitized from the cuffs could create an adverse response to the needles.

Thanks!

Hi Derek!

it’s a great question that you ask. I use blood flow restriction training a lot in the same session as dry needling. My preference is to do dry needling first and then blood flow restriction training most specifically because you will get neurological effects from the dry needling and you’ll have tissue tone reduction and then I’m going to train those new behaviors and movement patterns with whatever exercises I do under blood flow restriction. I have done it both ways and it’s fine Either way. When in doubt, I try to encourage my new needlers to think of dry needling like any other manual therapy in the ordering of treatment techniques during a treatment session. I have not noticed any kinds of adverse effects with the dry needling being before or after blood flow restriction training. I think it’s a great question that you ask because both modalities promote an increase in blood flow and oxygenation to the local tissue and so paired together, they can be even more beneficial!

Hope this helps!
