I have a pt with TMJ and cervical pain. I did dry needling to her SCM and trigemial distribution 2 days ago and she reports continued burning sensation where needles were placed and states it still feels like the needles are in.  Any advice on how to decrease sensation, or why this happened?

Hi Kendra,

I have needled literally thousands of faces and not had a sensation last more than a day maybe 2 but resolution always occurs.  If the sensation is persisting and burning that is a nerve based issue and she may have more going on than we know without knowing more about the patient hard to tell.  She can certainly put heat on it, take an NSAID.  If she does not have a rash or other outbreak I can't imagine this will not resolve.  I would probably not needle her again or try on an arm and see what happens but she is certainly an outlier on response to a superficial needing technique.
